Diamond Cutting

Diamonds may be the hardest substance on earth, but they can chip or crack. Once a diamond is chipped or cracked it is at risk of further damage, similar to a ding in a windshield that is left untreated. Damaged diamonds should be recut for safety and beauty.

Diamond repair versus recutting

A chipped diamond can be repaired or re-cut.

A diamond repair fixes the chip while keeping the original facets the same. For example, an older cut like an Old European or Old Mine Cut diamond can be repaired, keeping the same cut and shape. Diamond repairs start at $325.

A recut not only fixes the chip, but also refacets the diamond for better sparkle. Diamond recuts start at $475.

Most diamonds are originally cut to yield a bigger gem, instead of a beautiful, sparkling diamond. Recutting your diamond often gives a surprising increase in its brilliance.
